An alternative treatment for any kind of cancer, including mesothelioma, is a type of therapy that is not specifically approved for the treatment of that particular disease. In addition, most alternative treatments are not endorsed by doctors, especially mainline oncologists, though more and more physicians and other members of the medical community have begun to recognize the positive effects that these treatments can have on their patients.
While none of the alternative mesothelioma treatments listed below offer any sort of promise for a cure, they can certainly improve the patient's quality of life through the relief of pain and the stress and anxiety often associated with a fatal disease such as this aggressive, asbestos-caused cancer.
The most common alternative treatments used by mesothelioma patients are as follows.
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) Therapy
Though the concept of receiving electrical "zaps" might seem scary to some, mesothelioma patients have indeed reported some success with this alternative therapy. TENS involves the placement of electrodes along the nerve pathway. The electrodes provide a small electric shock which is said to prompt the body to produce a substance similar to morphine which, in turn, reduces pain. The procedure is non-invasive and seems to carry few side effects.
Acupuncture
Also used for pain relief, acupuncture is an ancient Chinese art performed by a skilled practitioner in the field. The acupuncturist places long, thin needles into the patient's skin at designated points on the body. He/she is well-versed as to what points address what issues. Treatments vary in price and, for the safety of the patient, must be performed by a knowledgeable acupuncturist.
Massage Therapy
Designed to relieve stress and create a state of relaxation, massage therapy is generally used to help the patient escape the anxiety of the disease. It can also be used to relieve nausea associated with traditional therapies. It may be performed in a doctor's office, by a chiropractor, or by a licensed massage therapist. Prices vary but, in some cases, insurance may cover this therapy. (Check your individual policy.)

Aromatherapy
Like massage therapy, aromatherapy promotes a state of tranquility and relaxation. This therapy, which became quite popular in the 1990s and early 21st century, employs the use of essential oils. The scent of the oils are said to create a relaxing, rejuvenating state. An expert in aromatherapy can suggest the use of specific oils for your needs.
Meditation
It's difficult to relax when you're sick, but meditation can help. It takes just a few lessons for an individual to learn how to meditate properly. After that, the patient can summon the state of meditation whenever it is needed. That means this form of alternative therapy is quite inexpensive and many say it helps calm their restless minds.
